So here, their second full length record comes to you filled with a very emotional approach to politics (think CrimethInc.). The Uranus heaviness is still here, but lots of parts also reminded me of Arsen whom they share members with. In some metallic moments I even thought about Catharsis or late Morning Again. This record can give me goosebumps like Catharsis can give me goosbumps and I think it is awesome how heaviness and melody go hand in hand here. I thought that Angstzustand was a great live band and I didn't like it that they were talking about a possible split up when I last saw them. My appreciation for this band is mainly caused by the lyrics and thoughts behind their music and the knowledge that these people actually mean what they have to say. (mashnote.net) Oh man, this record was delayed so many times and I was really waiting for this second album of northern Germany's finest! It's finally here and now after I listened to it several times I can say that it was worth to wait. The first album was already very great but this one here is even better 'cause it's even more aggressive and since I've seen them live last year I knew that those guys do hardcore for passion! Like on the last record the lyrics are very intelligent and in German, every songs comes with an explanation and beside the booklet they attached an English lyric-sheet! The booklet itself is more like a book with the similar design like the cover. The lyrics got impressive phrases like "Hope Is Stagnation" or "Power Makes Sick" and behind such sentences they show their society- and human-critical point of view. Let's come to their music, the album opens with the title-track "Malen Nach Zahlen" and has a short instrumental Intro before Angstzustand start their metallic hardcore attack, mid-tempo grooving hardcore with a screamo-touch! Compared to the last album the sound hasn't changed that much, they just developed it and stayed true to their hardcore-style with this Uranus-touch, which makes their musical creation even more interesting. They also throw in calm passages with dissonant riffing but just till they break out with deep growled, shouted vocals and straight forward metallic hardcore! Unfortunately this album is much too short, hope to hear more new stuff of them because their bassist switched to second guitar and they have a new bass-player (who also plays in Arsen Aka. Segundo album de esta banda alemana en el mismo sello que confio en ellos para hacerles debutar y que sigue la estela dejada por su album debut "Ohne dich sind wir allein" .Para mi no supone un paso adelante en su sonido, mas bien un paso en horizontal porque musicalmente siguen haciendo exactamente lo mismo, si remarco esto debe ser porque no me convencio mucho su anterior disco.Liricamente politicos y activamente veganos, musicalmente se podrian definir como una mezcla de Uranus, Yage o Acme cosa nada mala, pero porque no me llega a convencer teniendo esas referencias?, en mi opinión suenan mas intensos pero mas lentos que el anterior disco y lo que por encima de todo no me gusta es la producción ya que el sonido llega a ser demasiado metalico y demasiado limpio, muy caracteristico de bandas de Scorched eart policy o Perkoro, es decir metal caotico aleman, no obstante el sexto y ultimo tema "Jahre" esta increible, deja a los otros cinco a la altura de los callos de Tony genil y en directo estoy seguro que deben estar de pi madre porque el cantante tiene una fama de jarto de la colina de la virgen, pero claro eso en un disco no se ve. (uveviolence) Ganska lustigt, det var inte alltför många månader sedan jag först introducerades för tyska Angstzustand genom att plocka upp deras debutfullängdare "Ohne dich sind wir allein", och jag gillade vad jag hörde. Kvartetten släppte nyligen uppföljaren, "Machen nach zahlen" och jag satt och funderade bra länge på om jag skulle göra mig besväret att beställa den ifrån Tyskland. Men i samma veva hör italienska Shove records, som släppt cdversionen av alstret, av sig och frågar om jag  kunde vara intresserad av att recensera den. Självfallet, sa jag och var glad resterande del av dagen. Jag skulle utan några större besvär kunna säga att den slöa och malande ångestartade typen av hardcore som Breach och Neurosis mfl. svarade för är ett passerat kapitel för min del, med ett fåtal undantag. Breach's milstope "It's me god" som en gång var lika med bibeln är idag inget jag går igång allt för ofta på. Det har helt enkelt bara spelat ut sin roll precis som så mycket annat. Med tanke på detta borde den musik Angstzustand skapar i princip kännas totalt likgiltig och trist för mig, men det gör den inte. Förstås. Hade så varit fallet hade jag inte ens orkat göra mig besväret att recensera den. Det som nog skiljer Angstzustand åt mest med nyssnämnda är att de är så mycket mer melodiösa än exempelvis Breach. Oktavriffen slits som aldrig förr i de flesta utav låtarna och tillsammans med de ångestladdade sånginsatserna på tyska skapar de något jag faktiskt inte alls tycker är fyskam. Inledande titelspåret börjar trevande med en stämningsfull bas för att snart även låta en gitarr ansluta sig till samma sinnesstämning. Det skulle kunna bli väldigt segt, men då är det så skönt att se att Angstzustand inte tjatar ut det utan låten brister istället snart ut i ett melodiöst och tungt inferno där sången och all dess extra pålägg gör sitt med bravur! För första gången känner jag att jag har någon nytta av alla de tyska lektioner jag tagit under mina år bakom skolbänken. "Hoffnung is stagnation" (Hope means stagnation) upprepas om och om igen, allt mer lidelsefullt för var gång och jag kan bara inte låta bli att relatera till underbara band som Envy och Funeral diner. "Machen nach zahlen" är ett album, men med sina knappa sex låtar skulle det i princip lika gärna kunna varit en Ep. Å andra sidan har låtarna en snittlängd och en helhetsbild som får det att kännas som så mycket mer. Bland de episka och stämningsfulla låtarna smyger sig ett och ett annat riff av betydligt piggare karaktär upp och fungerar bra som komplement. Det enda jag i slutändan skulle vilja sätta ett minus för är dubbelpedal trummandet. Jag gillar det inte alls och delar av exempelvis femte spåret "Hunger in prozent" skulle lika gärna kunna varit typ Dismember eller något sånt, trivialt. Däremot blir det ett extra plus för den schyssta layouten på skivan och för de engelska översättningarna på lyriken. Även om det känns något pretentiöst och pk att skriva långa förklaringar kring varje text. Varför kan dom inte bara lämna den biten till lyssnarna istället? Texterna bär ju ändå för med mesta på väldigt tydliga budskap. (voidfaith.net) Probablement un grand cd. Mais je ne pense pas à la musique. Certes, la musique d Angstzustand est morose, brutale, violente même lorsque tout devrait se calmer, on pense à de l emo et puis plus du tout, à du stoner et puis du metal, puis du crust et finalement on ne catégorise plus ce qui ne peux pas l etre. Alors on lit les paroles et elles s accordent parfaitement avec les sons. Avec cette question : Pourquoi les gens acceptent-ils leurs vies conditionnées, qu ils ne controlent plus depuis longtemps, pourquoi veulent ils vivre comme leurs parents alors que ceux ci n ont rien compris, pourquoi veulent ils devenir adultes en laissant de coté leurs envies et leurs personnalités ? Et c est cette volonté (ou peut etre est-ce juste une idée lancée vers nous?) de changer nos vies en en prenant le contrôle qui donne du sens, de la cohérence à ce disque, qui n en avait meme pas besoin. La musique envoie et les idées nous montre où va le groupe, et on espere qu ils ne changeront pas de voie. (tearsfromsilence.com) Nu är det dags för alla läsare att plocka fram sina lexikon för Angstzustand är ett tyskt band med riktigt viktiga budskap att förmedla. Själva namnet Angstzustand är tyska för ett sorts rädsel-tillstånd, med sin råa hardcore beskriver de sin rädsla för alla inaktiva/passiva människor som låter sina drömmar passera, och liv som formas efter samhällets mallar. Hur nationalstaten bara är dålig, och att man inte kan leva på gamla rutiner. Bandet i sig känner jag knappt till, och jag kan inte direkt påstå att jag är insatt i den tyska hardcorescenen överhuvudtaget. Och trots att detta är en skiva där alla texter är på tyska, så tilltalar den mig väldigt mycket. Politiskt hardcore där bandet själva kommenterar låtarnas budskap i bookletten, är nått jag uppskattar väldigt mycket. Instrumentalt är detta en ganska så mörk hardcore, där den tyska sången är väldigt slagkraftig. Det mest uppmärksamsvärda och bästa spåret på skivan är i mitt tycke, Deutschgeist, en låt med ett otroligt medryckande tempo. I och med låten förmedlar de en otrolig ilska emot denna tyska kulturen, nazismen kommer för alltid leva kvar så länge som tyskarna vill bibehålla sina traditioner. Men det är ju såklart inte bara i tyskland som kulturen river upp en massa sår. Historien är fylld av kvinnoförtryck vart man än beger sig, och vårt egna "fina" land är ju målat med kristendomens färger, fler har ju dödats i kristendomens namn än nazismen / kommunsimen t.ex. Iallafall, ska jag inte fortsätta med min predikan nu, vill egentligen bara få fram att denna låt är otroligt stark, speciellt eftersom den kommer från ett tyskt band. Då alla andra verkar vara lite hysch hysch om detta ämnet, så finner jag det väldigt starkt av bandet att föra ämnet på tapeten. Det första spåret jag hörde på skivan var Jetzt. som jag efter att jag samtalat med Manuel, ägaren av Shove Records, laddade ner från deras deras hemsida. Med ett kaotiskt intro med dubbeltramp och hetsiga gitarrer inleds denna riktigt vackra låten. Blev alldeles sagolik när jag först fick höra den otroligt mjuka skiftning från det agressiva introt, till det underbara lugnare partiet. Även om du som läsare inte kan tyska, så får den musikala upplevelsen tillsammans med textraden ("Wenn du eh' dein ganzens leben kämpfen musst, warum dann nich für die dinge die dir wirklich wichtig sind?" [- vilket på svenska betyder... När du ändå måste kämpa hela ditt liv, varför då inte kämpa för sakerna som verkligen är viktiga för dig.) dig ändå en att känna att du verkligen förstår vad sången handlar om. Om du trots min lilla beskrivining inte förstår låtens budskap, ger jag dig nu chansen att läsa bandets egna kommentarer: "We fear making our dreams into reality so much. So much damn fear and uncertainty to live cut our wildest dreams only once. To live, to really live... And not only pretend to do so. School, parents and our surroundings have trained us to slowly rot in patterns given to us. As good children that we are (with the exception of a short rebellious period - showing a pissed off but yet content face) we have learned to give our energy, to let it being pumped out of us and to wastefully steal that energy back from others. Taking over that same exploitative mentality that has been tought to us. At the same time we have learned that living your dreams and doing everything to let them come true (to finally throw our stupid and degraded lives into the garbage can) is impossible nonsense. Fuck, when do we finally realize that so much more living is possible and stop being satisfied by the lives we currently lead." Skivan i sin helhet är riktigt bra, inga låtar som direkt sticker ut. En skiva som är lagom varierande, och låter precis som hardcore ska låta. Att texterna är på tyska är absolut inget hinder, det förstärker istället intrycken. Nackdelen med skivan är att den är lite för kort, endast 23 minuter. Om du vill leva kvar i din idylliska lilla värld, där allt är så vackert, är detta såklart inget för dig. Detta är antikommersialism på hög nivå, i mitt tycke mer utav en upplysningsbok än en skiva, men den kan även fungera som en urtömning av all agressiviteten inom dig. Skivan finner du på Shove Records, och jag rekomenderar dig starkt till att ge bandet en chans. 7/10 (doublepeace) This record is beautiful. Filled with complicated melody, harsh edges, and meaningful lyrics, this LP delivers everything i want. Their sound can be described as a meeting of Yage, Yaphet Kotto, Dawnbreed and His Hero Is Gone. By that I mean complicated song layering, with heavy parts on top of melodic parts. The conglomeration of these styles makes for an intriguing sound that covers lots of ground. Angstzustand gives you a sound to be absorbed in and a message to ponder. Very cool (heartattack #39) Sometimes harsh, rumbling hardcore from germany may be just what the doctor ordered. In this case, this release almost hit that spot. Angstzustand take a collage of styles and melt them all together, making for an appealing release. They take elements of hardcore, metal and emo, along with some rumbling bass lines and sharp-edged guitars riffs, and create a very enjoyable listen. Most of this is mid-tempo, and the thing that stood out to me was the way much of this kept an edge of mellowness and melody, while remaining brutal and aggressive at the same time. Worth a listen for sure (max rock'n'roll#246 - rob coon column) Das Leben als Fanzine Macher ist mitunter nicht leicht. Jeden Monat wird man mit Unmengen von schlechten Releases zugemüllt. Und als würde das nicht schon reichen, melden sich in regelmäßigen Abständen Nachwuchsbands/-labels mit ihren unausgereiften „Produkten“ und wollen besprochen werden. Glücklicherweise gibt es aber auch positive Überraschungen. Neulich trudelte bei mir eine E-Mail von Shove Records Macher Manuel Piacenza ein, mit der Nachfrage, ob ich nicht einige seiner Releases besprechen wolle. Eines davon waren Angstzustand, die ich kurz davor in beschaulichem Rahmen live erleben durfte und die mit einer kraftvollen, abwechslungsreichen Show überzeugen konnten. Insbesondere der agile Sänger blieb mir im Gedächtnis haften. Und all das, was live perfekt funktioniert hat, ist auf „Malen Nach Zahlen“ mindestens genauso gut. Geboten wird klischeefreier „Hardcore“, der sich begrüßenswerter weise in keine der gängigen Schemata pressen lässt. Es gibt eine Menge „Noiseausbrüche“, die aber immer wohl kontrolliert klingen, nie fehlplatziert sind. Dazu viele melodische Momente, welche aber niemals die Musik verwässern oder langweilig klingen. Das Ganze selbstredend mit einer Punkattiütde runtergerotzt. Freunde von alten Breach oder Neurosis kommen bestimmt auf ihre Kosten, auch wenn das hier nicht so opulent produziert ist, was mich aber überhaupt nicht stört. So klingen Platten nun einmal, die engagierte Menschen in Selbstregie produzieren. Wenn irgendwer Zann kennt, die würden auch als Referenz durchgehen, auch wenn bei Angstzustand der Metalanteil gen null tendiert, aber wer kümmert sich schon um Genreschubladen. I’m completely lost! ‘Malen Nach Zahlen’ is the band’s second album and according to the label it’s even more intense and better produced than their first album called, ‘Ohne dich sind wir Allein’. Still, completely lost! The sound should be an energetic and aggressive blend of melodic parts à la Yage and chaotic and evil parts in the typical Bremen sound. Again, completely lost! So since I know nothing of the past and present of Angstzustand, let’s think that the aforementioned information doesn’t exist, shall we? ‘Malen Nach Zahlen’ is a-seven-song album filled with energetic and aggressive melodies, escorted by a growly screaming voice. Even though Angstzustand could be classified as a heavy emotive hardcore band, they just don’t fit in the whole idea of bands like Shai Hulud and Poison The Well, since they blend those brutal Emo elements with intense and even depressive influences. The desperate result feels like a chaotic version of a blend of old Instil, from Holland, and Callisto, from Finland. The album comes with English translation of all lyrics, which is rather pleasant since these have an interesting anarcho socio-political aura. Gutes Album! (caraacara) L'inizio dell'album degli Angstzustand potrebbe trarre in inganno: il basso arpeggiato, la chitarra distorta appenna accennata e la batteria che stenta ad entrare in ritmo... uno potrebbe quasi pensare agli Shellac. Ma non diciamo cavolate, qui si tratta di hardcore allo stato puro. Voce possente sempre sull'orlo di sfociare nel growl più zozzone che viene ogni tanto coadiuvata dagli urli degli altri componenti della band. Chitarre in primo piano ma non troppo, in modo da lasciare spazio (e meno male) al basso che fa capolino più di quanto non si faccia caso. La batteria si mantiene sempre su livelli standard e, penalizzata da una produzione che le concede ben poco in termini di potenza, di sicuro non brilla. Apprezzabile comunque di fare un hardcore leggermente più melodico del solito, e da lodare ampiamente la scelta di allegare al cd un foglietto con la traduzione dei testi dal tedesco all'inglese. Di sicuro ai fan dell'hardcore non spiacerà ascoltare questo album, ma non aspettatevi nessuna rivoluzione visto che per gli Angstzustand quella è solo nei testi (kathodik.it) Angstzustand haben mich mit ihrem Debütrelease schwer beeindruckt. Geboten werden schwere, metallische Riffs, die auf deutsche Texte treffen, die globale wie individuelle Probleme behandeln. In einer Zeit, wo die meisten Texte zumeist auf Englisch sind und persönlicher Natur sind, kann man Angstzustand schon als Ausnahmefall betrachten, besonders, wenn die Musik sich im Hardcoresektor bewegt. Was mich freut, was ich aber auch eigentlich schon wusste, ist, dass die Texte keineswegs stupide oder stumpf sind, sondern den Hörer zum Nachdenken bringen, da hier eine individuelle Sichtweise vom Leben allgemein an den Start gebracht wird. Es kommen Themen zur Sprache, über die man sich vielleicht bewusst schon gar nicht mehr im Klaren ist. Die Musik ist meiner Ansicht nach eine perfekte ebenbürtige Untermalung dazu. Melodischer, kantiger Hardcore, mal abgehend, mal druckvoll im Midtempobereich. Die 4 Jungs aus Flensburg liefern zu ihren Texten noch Linernotes, die zumindest klar machen, was die Texte für sie bedeuten. Passend zu ´malen nach Zahlen´ vielleicht stellvertretend der gleich betitelte Opener des Albums, welches aus 7 Liedchen besteht, die auf jeden Fall viel besser produziert sind als die des Vorgängers: ´Das warten die Geduld und die Hoffnung auf bessere Tage oder Zeiten hilft vielleicht sich an vieles zu gewöhnen aber all das macht uns nicht lebendiger und bringt sicherlich nie, niemals veränderung wo bleibt unsere ungeduld? hoffnung ist stagnation! Die Linernotes ziehe man sich doch bitte direkt mit dem Album. Oder man lässt es und geht einfach zur Musik ab. Aber ich denke, dass Angstzustand mehr als das wollen. Endlich mal wieder eine Band, die mehr als Momentaufnahmen bietet. Auch das kann ganz schön sein, aber dies hier ist mal endlich wieder ein Anstoß (sweetjanemusic.de) All in all, Angstzustand's music shows an intense face. It catches - especially at the first look. But it lacks innovation. The music: a combination of emotional screaming, desperate melodies, mid-tempo structures. Slow parts that introduce the frames of melodies, monotonous at times followed by more or less nervous outbreaks. Slow down, move forward, repeat the words talking, scream scream scream, fall into a wall of sound again, but not too long: cut. German screamo, I'd say, yes that's it. If I could chose, I'd take the monotonous parts and some of the really intense medlodies, the few doublebase-"attacks" and the sporadous breakdowns, my favourite: song number four, "Jetzt". Lyrics and content - this all is an old hardcore-story: a very personal confrontation with the world and with society. Alienation is the devil, come on let's fight the bad. Please, you can also keep your apealls and your wisdoms that tell us nothing new at all like (e.g.): "Come on, fucking grow up bevore your life really begins. The waste of your lifetime that's way too short means the death of your childhood. The death of your ability to just be playful - your ability to love." Alienation again here. These things are way too important to be messed around with in old so called critical phrases. The production: really awesome, it makes this record intense. References: old Sabeth, some Uranus (danceofdays.org) Già prima di sentire il contenuto del nuovo disco degli Angzustand ho avuto una buona impressione nei confronti di questo gruppo, derivata dal fatto che i quattro ragazzi tedeschi hanno deciso di inserire insieme al booklet un foglio con le traduzioni delle loro liriche, precedute da una breve introduzione in cui si spiega all'ascoltatore quanto per la band sia fondamentale che si capiscano sino in fondo le intenzioni e le motivazioni che stanno dietro alla musica proposta. Iniziando l'ascolto mi accorgo poi che tale buona impressione iniziale era tutt'altro che ingiustificata: questi Angzustand suonano un efficacissimo metalcore che predilige l'impatto fortemente emozionale alla pura brutalità. La scuola tedesca si fa sentire parecchio (echi di Caliban in lontananza), ma viene combinata in modo efficace con una attitudine decisamente più diretta, quasi screamo: un mix perfetto di precisione tecnica tipica del metal e urgenza hardcore. Se la produzione, impeccabile, tende a mettere in risalto il primo dei due ingredienti citati, i saliscendi chitarristici rimandano invece alla seconda componente. Un disco, nel suo genere, perfetto(punkstation.it) Angstzustand occupy a punishing no man’s land lying between such heavyweights as Tragedy and Shikari, retaining the driving melodies and harsh, rasping vocals of the former and the pounding, octave-driven malevolence of our Dutch friends. The songs are on the lengthier side, giving them time to build and sprawl from brooding chordal fragments up into double bass pedal-led urgency and huge galloping walls of tidal noise. Each song is a tightly played slab of near-relentless ferocity, a churning maelstrom that, if it were a natural element, would be reducing buildings to rubble and uprooting farmsteads. Thankfully translated, the lyrics stray from the typical doom, woe, my-life-is-hell variety and represent positive statements about seizing the day, as well as thoughtful critiques of blind national pride, the penal system and food distribution. Good stuff. As much as I want to rave about this record there seems to be surprisingly little to say. But put simply, this could well be the best hardcore record I’ve heard from Germany in recent times (collective-zine.co.uk) Emoviolence in salsa teutonica (corroborata tra l’altro da uno screaming in lingua madre) è il piatto forte preparatoci dagli Angstzustand. Angstzustand have definitely something to say and some people find the way they communicate cheesy, but I actually like it very much. As it looks like at the moment, Angstzustand are on hiatus right now, so these 7 tracks might be the last songs you will hear from them. Angst ridden hardcore with harsh metal thrown into the mix. Comparisons include faster Acme or especially Uranus, with thoughtful, political German lyrics full of hope that springs out of frustration and nice liner notes, giving you some more information about the meaning of the songs. As hopeful the lyrics are, as evil and dark the music hits your sappy ears. The singer goes from hellish screaming to spoken word passages while the brutal and heavy guitar and drum sound adds a harsh breakdown here and there. I can imagine a lot of people smiling and nodding their head to the sound of the beat. A really cool record by a band that deserved some more recognition. Get it! (poisonfree.com) Secondo disco per i tedeschi Angstzustand, che dopo un primo disco convincente uscito in germania per Bewildered Youth, pubblicano il seguito per Shove. Il disco mostra una crescita ulteriore del gruppo, che fonde certo hardcore di matrice tipicamente teutonica, metallone e crust, con parti più melodiche e crescendo trascinanti. Le voci, una più urlata e una più crust, "cantano" in tedesco, ma stavolta non mi ha dato il solito effetto estraniante (alla Rammstein per capirci...), qui l'intensità dei pezzi dei brani è tale che si viene trascinati in un mood cupo e disperato. Perfettamente bilanciati dal punto di vista strumentale, i quattro suonano sporchi e abrasivi, ma non c'è un suono di troppo né niente fuori posto: anche gli attacchi di doppia grancassa sono inseriti al posto giusto, evitando il rischio dell'effetto tamarro-metallaro. Unica pecca dell'artwork scuro e intrigante è il fatto che sia scritto solo in tedesco, e questo non aiuta un ignorante come me a capire i testi. Un disco potente, selvaggio, disperato... (sodapop.it) Dal nome impronunciabile e incomprensibile, gli Angstzustand vengono dalla Germania, e tradotto nella nostra lingua il loro nome vorrebbe dire qualcosa come 'Stati di Timore / Ansia '. Un nome che suona già come una promessa insomma. Note di basso introducono il primo brano di questo Malen Nach Zahlen, secondo album del gruppo (il primo era uscito per un'etichetta tedesca). La title track si rivela composta da un lungo intro strumentale, che da solo basta a farci capire la direzione Post-Core del lavoro. Ed infatti, nei successivi brani ritroveremo l'influenza soprattutto degli Isis, sebbene la base Metal-Core, da bravi tedeschi, sia ben riconoscibile nelle chitarre, mentre la voce, sebbene sporca ed urlata, ha a volte alcune inflessioni più emozionali e dalle urla stridenti, che più che altro mi hanno direttamente ricordato i nostrani Dehumanize, esempio ne è Macht Macht Krank, perfetta per un album della band capitolina. Nei brani è però presente anche una parte più melodica, ed anche la voce a volte si schiarisce e prende connotazioni più Emo Screamo... Quest'album è insomma un incrocio tra degli Isis meno opprimenti e di un Metal più melodico, ed ad esempio la melodia pulita degli Yage (Hunger In %, 7 Jahre), e il risultato è davvero apprezzabile. Senza essere un capolavoro questo lavoro rimane comunque un buonissimo album, un bel Cd che anche se non appena uscito non è una cattiva idea procurarsi. Together with the personal and political lyrics sheet which also comes in English, the band tries to spread their word - and in my views, they are fully convincing in any respect. Restless, yet wild hardcore punk with a mission. Just a total crusher, honey. One of the few German bands who could carry the tag "true emo". A great album! (enoughfanzine.com)
